Time to Chill 8.30.11

Standard

Better late than never, hm?

Now, I have some really great news to announce but am not ready to announce it quite yet.  You might be thinking, “What great news could she possibly announce?  She went to Michigan for her birthday on a surprise trip.  Her boyfriend of almost 6 years JUST proposed to her.  Seriously.. what could be better than that?”

Now, I’m not saying this is better than those things.  Really — Bret proposing to me is probably the greatest thing in the entire world. However, this is the first time in my life where I feel like a I have a clearer picture of my future.  I’m SO EXCITED for what things are waiting for me and Bret just around the corner.  We are so excited about this next step and are ready to take it together.

I’m going to call this post greener pastures.

August — you have been quite the month.

2011 — you have been quite the year.

I am so thankful for everything and everyone right now.  More now than ever before do I believe that everything happens for a reason.

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

I have tons of stuff I need to do today, so this post won’t be too long.

We had a wonderful week that involved a lot of celebrating with our friends.  Monday night, we had the pleasure of going to Wing Night with Jay.  Jay just competed in a Sprint Triathalon last weekend (which Bret and I probably would have gone to support had we not gotten engaged) and finished 28 out of over 100 participants!  Total awesomeness.  On Wednesday night, Abe and Jane made us dinner (We are not worthy!)  It was so yummy!  We hadn’t seen them for awhile (since Bret and I have been MIA from Pittsburgh), so we made sure to stay up and hang out for awhile.  Last night, Bret and I were able to have Sean and Paige over for dinner.  THANK GOD!  I had so much food from my past two CSA boxes that I needed to use or else the veggies were going to go bad.

And now it’s Friday.

*sigh of relief*

There are also a lot of things going on outside of this music blog that if I can ask everyone to just cross their fingers — I’d really appreciate it.

Other than that, I hope you all have a great weekend, and I will see you Monday!

Time to SERIOUSLY Unwind

Standard

So back a little over a month ago, I made a pretty long post dedicated to my twin sister since it was our birthday.  As you know for my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me by taking me on a trip to Lake Michigan.  Well, apparently, a large majority of our friends and family thought that Bret was going to propose during that week.

If Bret had proposed during that week, I would definitely let all of you know.

So no.  Bret did not propose to me during my trip to Lake Michigan.

However… HE DID PROPOSE LAST WEEK!!

I’m still kind of reeling from everything that has been going on this past month:

  1. Birthday Celebrations
  2. Birthday trip to Lake Michigan
  3. Visit Bret’s family to see his sisters
  4. Visit the Jersey Shore to see family members
  5. Get ENGAGED
  6. Drive home to tell family members
  7. Take a moment to breathe

PHEW!

I know it probably isn’t going to get “easier” — technically speaking — but I’m going to give myself two years until we get married.  Everyone seems to be freaking out a little bit about this date.

“You guys have been dating for almost 6 years and you want to wait an additional 2 years until you get married??!!”

Bret and I like the idea of being fiancé/fiancée for a little bit.  I mean, really… We know we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, and there are still some other things I’d like to focus on right now instead of planning a wedding.  If you all have waited for us to get married this long, I think you can handle the rest of the ride, hm?

It will be worth the wait.  Trust me.

Now… This is the part when I’m going to get cheesy/sappy/lovey dovey because – c’mon…  I’M ENGAAAAAGED!!

Bret.  You are the best.  You are my rock.  You have supported me in so many ways that I simply don’t even know where to start.  You tell me all the time how proud you are of me no matter what the situation is.  You tell me that I’m beautiful.  You have taught me how to enjoy the little things in life without missing out on the big ones.  You give me a reason to smile every single day and find ways to constantly make me laugh.  You are the glue — You are everything that makes me complete.  Where I am successful, you are right there beside me.  Where I fail, you are there to pick me up.  Thank you for giving me so many memories.  Words cannot express everything you have done for me these past (ALMOST!) six years.  I am so happy that I will be able to continue riding this roller coaster called Life with you until the day I die.

You are my best friend.  You are my soul mate. You are my fiancé (AHHH!!! 🙂 )

You are the love of my life.

As always, I’ve included a playlist.  Now, because I wanted to add some extra cheese to this special occasion, I’ve also created a “slideshow” of all the lyrics to the songs.  Honestly, half the reason these songs were chosen were because of the lyrics.  They’re very pertinent to our relationship and this wonderful engagement… so yeah.  If you want to read the lyrics along with the songs, check out the link below 🙂

Marina and the Diamonds – Radioactive

Standard

I love Marina and the Diamonds.  Every time “I Am Not a Robot” comes up on my iTunes, I not only listen to the song in its entirety, I usually play the song on repeat for an additional 3 times.

I just watched her new video for “Radioactive,” am I’m already obsessed.  Marina is simply gorgeous all the time, but I never thought she could pull off being a blonde so flawlessly.  Aside from being stunning in the video, Marina took a different route for this song:

I wrote ‘Radioactive’ in New York in the middle of a heat wave. Introduced to a glittering new nightlife, I fell in love with New York; it has this magic, fizzing white energy that no other city in the world has. I felt happy and was inspired to write a song that felt light and euphoric, a more streamlined, minimalistic style of songwriting.  I have changed my approach to songwriting completely, and as a result, written songs that I would never have written on my on (i.e on my shit Argos keyboard alone in my bedroom in London).  — Via NME.com

She has been working on her new album for about a year and a half and is expected to be released in early 2012.

Gawd.  I can’t wait.  Until then, enjoy “Radioactive” below.  I’ve also included her other new video “Fear and Loathing.”

Odaytay isway Idayfray!  I’mway osay excitedway!

Ok.  Sorry.  I honestly thought that maybe I would write this whole post in pig latin for no reason other than I’m in a goofy mood.  Then I realized how many people it would make mad/confused/annoyed/WTF, so I opted not to do it.

For some entertainment, you should press play on the video below, and watch the cat do his magic.

I can’t stop watching!!  HE’S SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

Ok.  I can tell that I’m going to get easily distracted today.

IT’S THE WEEKEND!

Dog is Dead – Glockenspiel Song

Standard

Have you ever had that feeling of finding a NEW song that you just can’t believe you found it and you’re so happy that you did because all you want to do is play it on repeat and tap your feet along to it and wave your head back and forth to the beat and sing along to the fun lyrics and think “I must go in my car now so I can play this as loud as I can on my speakers because the whole world needs to listen to this song?!!”

*breathes*

This is exactly how I felt when I first head Dog is Dead’s “Glockenspiel Song.”

Dog is Dead (pretty morbid band name, but whatever) is a five piece indie pop band from Nottingham, who have described their music as “an original blend of harmonious, indie-pop in the disco, with a cheeky jazz hint” and “uplifting pop for jazz junkies and choir folk”.

Gawwwwd.  I mean, really?  Pop + jazz + folk + indie = all my faves.

Their recent album Your Childhood was just released this past May and already, they are taking festivals by storm.  How can you resist their energy and hooky tunes?

If you want to find more about Dog is Dead, visit their Facebook page and MySpace page.  You will not regret it.

And really… any guys who opt to pose with a group of alpacas score big brownie points in my book (since my future calling is to be an alpaca farmer).

Time to Unwind 8.16.11

Ah.  Can you guys feel it?  That cool breeze in the air… The crickets chirping loud at night… All the windows and doors are left open…

Fall.  Is.  COMING.

Bret and I already made a vow this year to not consume anything pumpkin-related until September.  Last year, we got so excited about fall arriving and enjoyed as much pumpkin-flavored/scented items as possible (e.g. muffins, bread, candles, soap, drinks, etc.) that by the time October rolled around, we wanted nothing to do with pumpkin.

This year, we’re going to wait a month before we enjoy pumpkin in all its glory.

I’m ready for football games, hoodies, jeans, flannel shirts, and the changing colors of the leaves.

Until then, let’s enjoy a playlist.

Oh boy.  I have to get this out of my system first.  I think I can speak for everyone when I say that when I hear the “Jersey Shore,” there is one person that always comes to mind…

Ok.  Got that out of my system.  Bret and I are headed to the Jersey Shore this weekend.  It’ll be nice to have a little break with some sun, sand, and saltwater.  Obviously, I made an epic playlist for mine and Bret’s drive to NJ, but I was nice enough to include some of the songs for you guys for the weekend.  Bret appropriately named our playlist JERSEYLICIOUS.

Oh yea.  We’re good to go…

Catch ya’ on Monday!

FreeSol – Hoodies On, Hats Low

Standard

I can’t stop listening to this song.   It makes you bob your head.   It makes you rock your body back and forth.  It makes you want to grab a hoodie and hat and chill with this cool group of dudes in the video.

Oh, and did I mention that Justin Timberlake is in the video?

*swoooooooooon*

I will always have a special place in my heart for the former N*Syncer…  Justin directed their new music video and gave them a nice shout out on his Twitter to check out the video (which is how I found it).

FreeSol is a progressive hip-hop, rock, and soul band from Memphis, Tennessee.  In 2006, Justin Timberlake, also a Memphis native, saw FreeSol perform at a jazz cafe in their hometown. Not too long afterwards, Justin signed them to his label, Tennman Records.  Not too long afterwards, JT was able to get them a major deal with Interscope Records.

With the end of summer slowly creeping up on us, this song reminds me that summer isn’t over yet.
